To be with the truthful

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent the Merciful.

“Hate no one, no matter how much they’ve wronged you. Live humbly, no matter how wealthy you become. Think positively, no matter how hard life is. Give much, even if you’ve been given little. Keep in touch with the ones who have forgotten you, and forgive who has wronged you, and do not stop praying for the best for those you love.” — ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (as)

Qari Abdul Basit, one of, if not the most famous reciters of The Qur’an.
Oh, he’s playing the Oud here, like a boss.
So, music is haram, right?

Yes, Music is haraam and this does not change anything.
The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Verily Allah, Mighty and Exalted, sent me as a mercy to the worlds, and in order to eradicate string instruments, the flute and others pre-Islamic pagan practices.‘[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 79, p. 250, no. 2] .
The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Music is a charm of adultery.’[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 79, p. 247, no. 26]
Imam al-Sadiq (as) said, ‘Singing (or music) is one of the things that Allah, Mighty and Exalted, has threatened to requite with the Fire, and this is the purport of Allah’s verse: “Among the people is he who buys diversionary words that he may lead [people] astray from Allah’s way without any knowledge, and he takes it in derision.”[ Qur’an 31:6]

Aw. What I do is … I have nasheeds and latmiyahs uploaded in my phone. I listen to that only!! God is with you! (:

Actually, i don’t listen to music in that way. I don’t put music in my cell phone  and I don’t get time to watch TV so listening to music on TV is out of question. So, the only time I really am exposed to music is when I’m watching a movie on my P.C or at work and public places. What I hate is that I really enjoy music when I do get to listen it. Which I should not. I should hate that I am being forced to listen to it but I don’t hate it. Then I feel guilty afterwards.

Here I’m trying my best to not listen to music and my colleagues are inflicting it on me. They like listening to music while working! I really feel tortured because of it. Music is a sin which I find difficult to keep away from. In fact I have struggled with it all my life.

And here I’m trying my best to NOT listen to music and it’s being inflicted on me. I can’t even say anything!

The Sixth Imam (a.s.) has said,

“The playing of violin promotes the growth of hypocrisy in the heart like water assists the growth of vegetation (algae).”

(Wasa’il ul-Shia)

Imam (a.s.) also says,

“If drums and cymbals are played at one’s house for forty days, Allah will impose a satan by the name of ‘faqandir’.The satans will infiltrate into every cell of the person’s body. With the spread of this evil, the person loses all sense of dignity and self-esteem. He will then not care as to what he says or what is said about him. Then, this satan blows into this person. As a result, he becomes utterly shameless. So mush so that he is not concerned or affected even if his women are dishonoured.”

(Wasa’il ul-Shia)

It is usually observed that the people in whose homes music is played with regularity are absolutely shameless and wanton.

Hazrat Imam ‘Ali ar-Riďa (a.s.) has said,

“To listen to a musical instrument is one of the Greater Sins.” (Mustadrak ul-Wasa’il)

(Taken from Greater Sins Vol.1)

I know this sin is very difficult to abstain from. Especially now when it’s so common. But we should remember that we are followers of Imam Ali(as) and Imam Ali(as) has set very high standards for his shias.

When one of Imam Sadeq(as)’s followers admitted to listening to music (it was played by his neighbour), Imam told him,

“…..Leave the evil things to the evil people because there are different people suitable for different things.”

When Hadhrat Adam (a.s) died, his infamous son Cain (Quabil) and Satan were very happy. Both gathered at a place and invented some musical instruments to celebrate the death of Hadhrat Adam (a.s). All such musical things which people now use for merrymaking have originated from that.
