One important thing you need to get used to as a psychotherapist is that your clients are very unpredictable, you have to be flexible and expect the unexpected.
On my first day of therapy with a schizophrenic woman (who is in remission), she looked at me and said flatly:”I don’t know why you are doing therapy on me, I don’t have any problems.”
Of course I later realized that this IS her biggest problem!
I had come prepared for the session but I really wasn’t expecting her to say that because previous clinical interviews had established that she had insight into her illness.
I was planning to do Cognitive Behavior Therapy with her, now I will just have to do insight oriented psychotherapy first.
